Marie Wandscheer, born on November 19, 1856, in Amsterdam as the daughter of Johan Frederik Christiaan Wandscheer and Anna Christina Pilger, grew up in an environment where art played a prominent role. Her father, director of a shipping company, provided her with the space to pursue her artistic calling. Marie remained unmarried throughout her life.Taught by Valentijn Bing, she began her artistic education at the Rijksakademie of Fine Arts at the age of nineteen, where she studied for ten years in the renowned 'ladies' class' under the guidance of August Allebé. During this time, she developed not only her artistic skills but also friendships with prominent artists, including Lizzy Ansingh and Willem Witsen.
After her education, she lived in various places but eventually settled in Ede, where she expanded her artistic horizon by taking etching lessons from Willem Witsen. She primarily painted flowers, figure pieces (mainly women), portraits, and interiors, in addition to creating pastels and etchings. Marie Wandscheer was actively involved in artists' associations, including Arti et Amicitiae and Pulchri.
Throughout her life, her work was exhibited in cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Ede, with several posthumous exhibitions in Ede, including the memorable exhibition "Marie Wandscheer weer aan de wand" at the Historical Museum Ede in 2006.
