Nola Hatterman was a Dutch actress, painter and designer who came into contact with progressive Surinamese in The Netherlands in the 1930s, such as Anton de Kom. In 1953 she settled in Suriname to teach the new generation of Surinamese artists. Hatterman's work focuses on the identity of Suriname and its people. She saw art as a weapon in the fight against discrimination and colonialism. After her death in 1984, the Nola Hatterman Institute was founded by former students, later renamed The Nola Hatterman Art Academy.
 
As an artist, Nola Hatterman embodies the shared (post)colonial heritage that Suriname and the Netherlands have and forms the pivot between Surinamese and Dutch art history.
 
Her works were recently bought by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and are included in the permanent display of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
