Extra information:

Nola Hatterman was a Dutch actress, painter, and designer who connected with progressive Surinamese individuals in the Netherlands during the 1930s, such as Anton de Kom. She made Suriname her home in 1953, dedicating herself to educating the emerging generation of Surinamese artists. Central to Hatterman's body of work was the exploration of Suriname's identity and its people. She wielded art as a tool in the battle against discrimination and colonialism.

Following her passing in 1984, former students established the Nola Hatterman Institute, later renamed The Nola Hatterman Art Academy. As an artist, Nola Hatterman embodies the intertwined (post)colonial heritage of Suriname and the Netherlands, serving as a link between Surinamese and Dutch art history. Notably, her pieces have been acquired by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and added to the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
